BIG Swing Set Project 2016 Set to Make World Record

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — April 18, 2016 – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County announces the BIG Swing Set Project 2016 in conjunction with Backyard Discovery. The event, scheduled for April 27-30 at Markham Park in Sunrise, Florida, will create a Guinness World Record for the longest swing set.

The BIG Swing Set Project is an ambitious initiative from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County (BBBS Broward) and Backyard Discovery to increase awareness of the impact mentoring has on children on the path to reaching their potential. The goal is to delight and inspire adults and children alike by living a childhood dream – having the largest swing set in the world.
BIG Swing Set Project will be the largest community service project ever completed by Big Brothers Big Sisters. Backyard Discovery, the largest residential swing set manufacturer in the US is donating the 50 deluxe modular swing sets for the Guinness Book of World Records project. Backyard Discovery products inspire imaginative outdoor play that help children build muscle, strength and coordination. Their sets include slides, swings, monkey bars, rock walls and more to get children playing outside.

The project and construction will begin on Wednesday, April 27 and the BIG Swing Set will be completed by Friday, April 29. The assembled swing sets will be very impressive – it will span more than the length of a football field. Sponsors and volunteers for the event include Publix, COMCAST, Miller Construction, Stiles, Advanced Roofing, Chester’s Fort Lauderdale Harley-Davidson and a team of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward board members.
On Saturday, April 30 at 9:00 am, Bigs and Littles will join us at the BIG Swing Set Project Community Reveal at Markham Park located at 16001 W. State Rd. 84 in Sunrise, Florida. The event will officially mark the Guinness World Record for the longest swing set. And, during the event, a small hidden plaque on each deluxe swing set will be revealed showing that each of them is for one of the families on site (surprise!). The reveal will be followed by a celebration and picnic until noon for all attendees, volunteers and the families receiving the assembled swing sets. After the celebration, volunteers will start the delivery of the swing sets to local families in the BBBS Broward program.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Backyard Discovery on this project,” said Ana Cedeno, President and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County. “The community support for BIG Swing Set Project has been strong and the families attending the Saturday event will be so excited when they find out they will get one of these sets for their homes. I suspect we’ll see a lot of big smiles!”

“This project is about raising awareness about both the importance of mentoring and kids’ health. The benefits of playing outdoors instead of indoors on computers or phones makes a huge difference in children’s health,” said Thomas Reed, E-Commerce Manager of Backyard Discovery. “We’re delighted to help Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward and the families they serve get outside to play.”

A time-lapse video of the epic swing set along with the volunteering, mentoring, building, playing smiling, learning, laughter and joy from all the people involved will be available from Backyard Discovery after the project is completed and will be shared on Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County’s Facebook page.
