On Saturday, March 16, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County’s Littles were matched with volunteers from FAU’s SAVI organization in a one-on-one community service project consisting of refurbishing skateboards donated by “Boards for Bros” at MUSE. Littles were even able to keep one of the skateboards.
Other activities for the students and children included designing stickers for the Littles to incorporate into the boards, access to interactive skateboard video games as well as magazines, videos, and model skate parks with toy skateboards. They also had access to an outdoor skate park where they were taught the skill of skateboarding, with individual attention provided by the instructors at “Board for Bros”.
This is the second event that Big Brothers Big Sisters has done in partnership with “Boards for Bros” to provide skateboards and instruction to Littles.
“In addition to learning the skill of skateboarding, the individual attention our Littles have gotten from the instructors assigned by “Board for Bros” contributed to these children building trust and self-confidence, conquering fears, gaining a sense of achievement and engaging in a healthy activity that keeps them away from behaviors that could put them at risk. All these are key values that BBBS stands for and provides through its one-on-one mentoring services,” said Eduardo Noriega, Recruitment and Partnership Coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is the premier mentoring organization in the country. Mentoring is a fundamental aid in the development of a child and in the process of reaching his/her full potential. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward serves around 1,500 children annually.
Boards for Bros is an organization committed to provide equipment, safe skate spots and youth mentoring in communities across the country. For the organization, a skateboard is not only a mode of transportation but a fun and life-changing tool for play, discovery, development of a physical skill, interaction with others who share the same interest and teaching problem-solving and perseverance.
