National Mentoring Month at BBBS of Broward County

January is National Mentoring Month. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward is starting off the year with our mentor appreciation month and Big recruitment!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward honors and appreciates our mentors every day, but in January, we ramp up our efforts to thank our volunteers and reach out to new mentors.

Did you resolve to start the new year by getting more involved in your community? January is the perfect time to explore volunteerism in Broward County, and Big Brothers Big Sisters has several events on the calendar, not only in January to celebrate National Mentoring Month, but throughout the year as well.

What Is National Mentoring Month?

National Mentoring Month was started by MENTOR, a national nonprofit, in cooperation with Harvard’s Chan School of Public Health in an effort to raise awareness about the need for more mentor volunteers, as well as to celebrate the generosity of volunteer mentors.

MENTOR, a 501(c)3 that promotes mentoring programs for youth, launched National Mentoring Month in 2002. It’s a national annual celebration that raises awareness about the need for mentors and celebrates the people and organizations who support these organizations. The purposes of National Mentoring Month are to:

• Raise awareness about the need for mentors locally
• Celebrate mentors and mentoring programs
• Recruit more mentors

Throughout January, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County will hold activities, fundraisers and recruitment events. Interested? Great! Come celebrate with us!

National Mentoring Month Activities

Check our events page for the most up-to-date schedule of events. The highlight of the month is our Big Thank You Breakfast, an annual event where we recognize our volunteers and donors, thanking them for their outstanding service. We also recognize individual volunteers, including our Big Brother of the year, Big Sister of the year, High School Bigs of the year and our workplace mentor of the year.

Other Big Events

Throughout the year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward holds events and celebrations to honor our Bigs and Littles, as well as our donors and non-mentor volunteers.

Share the Season: Our annual holiday drive helps provide gifts and support to families in Broward County.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake: This one of the largest and most enjoyable fundraising events in which BBBS chapters from all over the world bowl and raise funds that benefit their local chapters.

Swing for Kids’ Sake: Similar to the Bowl for Kids’ Sake event, this South Florida golf event raises funds that benefit BBBS of Broward, as participants vie for some amazing donated prizes!
