Volunteer Opportunities in Broward

School-based, peer-to-peer mentoring

We expanded our school-based mentoring programs to offer peer-to-peer mentoring opportunities for high school students who are interested in working with middle school and elementary school students. BBBS of Broward’s school-based mentoring programs match high school teens with younger students for site-based mentor relationships.

Similar to the adult school-based mentoring programs, high school Bigs meet with their Littles on a regular basis at school where they can work on homework, crafts, games, puzzles, or just fun one-on-one time. Teens go through an application, interview, and training process before they are matched.

The school-based mentoring program for high school students is an excellent opportunity for any teen, especially one who’s thinking about a career in social work, education, nonprofits, or any community-based field.

Site-based mentoring for adult Bigs with student Littles

We understand that commiting to a one-year match several hours a week is a big ask, especially for working adults with busy lives. That’s why we have created several programs that can fit easily into busy work schedules. For example, Bigs in our site-based mentoring programs meet with their Littles 2 to 4 times a month at school or community centers, usually during lunch hours or after school.

It’s amazing how just a few hours a month with an adult mentor can change the trajectory of a youth’s path in life!

Being a Big Brother or Big Sister mentor is less of a time commitment than most people assume. The program requires an investment of 4 to 6 hours per month with your “Little.” Even after 12 months, that equates to a little more than 2 days. Imagine how much good you can do toward positively impacting a child’s life in just 2 total days of time!

Bigs needed for Broward’s boys and young men

Men, we need you! With a much higher rate of women volunteers, BBBS programs are always searching for enthusiastic, qualified men to help Littles find the guidance they need to succeed in life.

  • Gender makeup of children enrolled in BBBS programs: 45% boys, 55% girls
  • Gender makeup of adult volunteers: 38% men, 62% women*

What you do with your Little is entirely up to you, as long as it is appropriate for their age and needs. Enjoy lunch, see a movie, go for walks, or take a tour of a local zoo or aquarium. There is so much to enjoy when you’re seeing it with someone who could be taking it all in for the first time!

Non-mentor volunteer opportunities with BBBS of Broward

If you’re interested in volunteering in Broward County but aren’t sure about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister yet, we have plenty of other opportunities that will help you get to know the organization while also giving back to your community.

With so many children, attendees, sponsors, and volunteers, we are always in need of more hands to help make each event run smoothly and keep children safe while they enjoy these interactions with the public. There are also plenty of opportunities to volunteer in positions that are less public-facing, such as compiling gifts for holiday functions, preparing for events behind the scenes, working as part of a preparation or cleanup crew for events, and more.

Whatever your interests and abilities are, we’ve got volunteer positions that help you give back to your community by sharing your talents and passions.

Financial support needed for Broward’s youth

Sometimes, we have more dollars to give than hours to spare. Your financial support helps us provide our programs and services in your local community, so we can develop more college grads, community leaders and entrepreneurs. Financial contributions start lots of things, like recruiting new Big Brother and Big Sister volunteers, covering the costs of background checks, while ensuring trained professionals match Littles to responsible Bigs. Your contributions enable ongoing supervision and relationship support for every Big, Little and Little’s family and provide cultural and social activities to enrich the children’s lives.
